ART IS SOURCE OF LIFE
"Art is like a fountain that flows eternally from universal intelligence, from which the artist draws in moments of intense inspiration.
Art, in all its literary and pictorial facets, is the most sublime expression that springs from the human soul.
Art is also civilisation, progress and evolution that broadens horizons and enlightens minds."
Martha Nassibou
THE PATH STORY
Martha Nassibou, daughter of Dejazmatch Nassibou Zamanuel and Woizero Aztede Babitcheff, was born in Addis Abeba in 1931. Shortly after the Italian invasion of Ethiopia she was taken with all her family to Italy where they lived as captives of the Fascist government from 1936 to 1944. Read about her eventful childhood in her published memoirs.
She attended the International School in Geneva and studied art at the Académie des Beaux Arts in Paris and the Art Students League in New York.
Martha was drawing and painting already as a child. Her first exhibition was held in 1945, when she was only 14, organized by the Ministry of Commerce in Addis Abeba on the occasion of the visit of Queen of Greece.
She later worked for the Ethiopian Ministry of Education, who commissioned her to illustrate school books for children.
In 1964, she moved to Europe where she continued to paint, exhibit, and execute commissioned work consisting mainly of portraits and large thematic canvases of Ethiopian inspiration. Martha has taught drawing and painting to both children and adults.
Although she favoured oil and pastel, she liked to experiment with new media and produced some electronic paintings.
Martha was also a writer and a poet. She published her memoirs, which was also a book to honour the memory her father, Dejazmatch Nassibou Zamanuel, hero of the Ethiopian struggle against the occupying Italian army.
Martha's had two daughters, Adey Abeba and Saba Christiane Lidete, from her first marriage with H.E. Ambassador Imru Zelleke. She had a son, Carlo Maria Emilio Nasibù Alfredo from her second marriage with Marquis Francesco Tortora Brayda di Belvedere.
